As many of you who attend the TLC meetings know, there has been a lot of discussion around technology transfer and entrepreneurship. Hopefully this forum will serve as a focal point for exchanging ideas and pushing forward interesting ideas.

If you have any questions or concerns about the Technology Transfer forum, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Todd,

Having reviewed the whitepaper and finding it to be well tought out and a good start for discussion I do still feel that post docs and entpreneurs are somewhat like oil and water. I look forward to hearing more about your tactics to engagfe these two behaviors. Further toward the growth and education of entpreneurs I have added an overview of our program here at The Center for Business and Technology Development. It is the program Systematic Entpreneurship and is focused on the development of entpreneurs at all business levels. If it of value I would be happy to discuss it further.

You're certainly not the only one who is concerned about trying to get postdoc's to behave as entrepreneurs. When we had our discussion with Stephen Auvil and David Fink of ACTIVATE, that was their main concern as well. To try and tackle this somewhat, we decided that as a prerequisite to an ACTIVATE program at NIH, there needs to be an evaluation of the potential participants. Some of the things we need to look at are any business background, ability/willingness to forgo salary and leadership skills. We're keeping an open mind that we're just not going to find these sorts of people in the postdoc pool. However, we're currently trying to schedule some talks with NIH people to see how they would view an ACTIVATE like program and to see if they have any experience in postdocs taking technology and running.

If this looks like it will fall flat on its face, we probably need to start thinking about a plan B. My initial thoughts was that if we can't find the needed scientific and entrepreneurial skills in the postdoc pool, maybe we need to look for them individually. I have no concerns that we could find postdocs capable of running a commercial development project, and if we could pair that person with someone more business oriented, either through a program like SE or maybe through association with the MBA programs and business schools in the area, we might be able to build suitable teams.

In any case, I think that support from programs like SE are going to be absolutely critical and we probably do need to arrange a meeting to discuss how support might occur after a company gets going. That is one place that ACTIVATE doesn't directly address. I'm assuming that the meeting with NIH is going to generate some interest on their part, so if we wait until we have a clearer picture of what they can do we can have a better discussion around how SE could fit.
